Book Title: The Long Song by Andrea Levy (author of Small Island, winner of the Orange Prize)
Review: Why do I love this book? A highly engaging narrative style, wonderful characters, theme of triumph over great adversity. The Long Song tells the story of Miss July, born a slave on a Jamaican sugar plantation in the 1800’s. Like the best historical fiction, you are completely immersed in the time, place and circumstances. I didn’t expect a book about slavery to be uplifting, but there were times while reading this novel when I laughed aloud and cheered the audacity and nerve of the black Jamaicans. Miss July proves that an indomitable spirit can never be enslaved. A great read! The Long Song, Andrea Levy. Hamish Hamilton Canada, Hard Cover $32.
